We always wanted the limited-edition Sony PlayStation 4 made for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. We still regret never getting it. The colour scheme remains the draw: that deep red shell, the gold dividing line, and the metallic grey controller make this a console we love looking back at.

The hardware takes its cues from Snake’s equipment. PlayStation’s original announcement describes the console’s deep red and gold detailing as inspired by his bionic arm, with a metallic grey DualShock 4 designed to recall his handgun. Both carry the Diamond Dogs emblem.
The European bundle paired the 500GB console and special controller with the Day 1 Edition of The Phantom Pain, including its bonus downloadable content. It launched across Europe, Australia and New Zealand on September 1, 2015, alongside the game. The vertical stand pictured was sold separately.

We shared three more shots in our follow-up. The appeal for us is still that colour scheme: a distinctive piece of Metal Gear hardware that makes the most of the PS4’s angular shape.
