In 2005, a remote island off the coast of Alaska becomes the center of a nuclear crisis. Shadow Moses, home to a nuclear weapons disposal facility, has been seized by the special forces unit FOXHOUND. Its demand is the remains of Big Boss, the legendary soldier whose legacy still hangs over those who served under him. The government has twenty-four hours to respond before the terrorists say they will launch a nuclear weapon.

For Solid Snake, the crisis begins far from the facility, in the solitude of his Alaskan retreat. Retirement has put distance between him and the battlefield, but not beyond the reach of Colonel Roy Campbell. Soldiers arrive to bring him back into service. The assignment waiting for him will pit him against FOXHOUND, the very unit he once belonged to—and one Campbell once commanded.
Two men inside Shadow Moses are central to the operation: DARPA chief Donald Anderson and ArmsTech president Kenneth Baker, both held hostage. Snake must bring them out alive while establishing whether the terrorists can carry out their nuclear threat. If they can, he must stop them before the deadline expires. The rescue and the investigation lead into the same locked-down facility, where every hour lost brings the ultimatum closer.
His approach is deliberately quiet. A submarine carries him toward the island, then a one-man swimmer delivery vehicle takes him closer to shore. The final distance must be crossed by swimming. Once inside, Snake will have to obtain weapons and equipment on-site, with Campbell directing him by Codec. This is a covert operation without official support: a single infiltrator sent against a heavily armed special forces unit.
Six FOXHOUND members are involved in the uprising. At their head is Liquid Snake, a commander who shares Snake’s codename and bears an unsettling resemblance to him. What begins as an urgent mission to free hostages and prevent a nuclear strike already carries the weight of a more personal confrontation. The enemy is not a distant, unfamiliar force. It comes from the military world Snake thought he had left behind.
Behind the ultimatum lies a story of inherited conflict, deception, and the question of how much a person’s future is shaped by their genes. Snake enters Shadow Moses to stop a threat. What awaits him also challenges his understanding of himself.
