Akio Ōtsuka reflects on Snake and hopes for one more Metal Gear from Hideo Kojima

In a new Bunshun Online interview, Akio Ōtsuka, the Japanese voice of Snake, would like Hideo Kojima to make one more Metal Gear for fans around the world.

Ōtsuka reflects on his attachment to Snake and the difficult position he feels caught in between his loyalty to Kojima and the fans who associate the character with his voice.

He previously said he did not want to work on Metal Gear without Kojima’s involvement, explaining that he takes pride in having helped create the series alongside him. He jokes that saying it left him unable to back down.

Asked whether he has personally discussed another Metal Gear with Kojima, he playfully leaves that to readers’ imagination.

The interview also includes a story we have heard before about how in MGS4 that Ōtsuka performed the motion capture for the closing scene, while his father, Chikao Ōtsuka, provided Big Boss’s voice. His father was surprised to discover he would be voicing his own son’s performance.

Ōtsuka also confirms that Snake’s iconic “Kept you waiting, huh?” began as an ad lib during recording, with Kojima present to decide whether to keep it.

A worthwhile read about the actor behind Snake, his connection to Kojima, and what Metal Gear still means to him.
