Many people are expressing some rather misguided opinions on this subject. So I'm here to share my perspective.
🚨Warning, WALL OF TEXT INCOMING. 🚨
Being a Japanese-based video game creator/director who worked for a Japanese-based video game developer/publisher (Konami), who released his games all over the world. The extent of Kojima's involvement in regional adaptations varied based on multiple factors.
Hideo Kojima has consistently demonstrated a nuanced approach to voice acting in his games, with a particular emphasis on the Japanese cast. While he maintains professional relationships with international voice actors, his connection to the Japanese cast is notably deeper. This preference stems from both practical and artistic considerations. It has ALWAYS been this way.
For instance, in developing Policenauts, Kojima personally selected actors with experience dubbing American films, aiming to capture a specific cinematic quality. This hands-on approach to casting has remained a hallmark of his production style, especially for Japanese voice work. Kojima's direct involvement extends to his recent projects, where he continues to personally oversee the casting process for both on-screen actors and voice talent as evident in his recent X posts and videos interacting with the cast of DS2.
While Kojima has worked closely with some English-language voice actors, such as Robin Atkin Downes, his primary focus has been on crafting the Japanese voice experience. This is evident in his meticulous attention to detail and his desire to create a cohesive, cinematic feel in his games. Kojima's preference for Japanese voice acting persists in his current projects.
In years past, Kojima has praised the English voice cast's performances and personally endorsed the English dubbing. This acclaim can be attributed to the exceptional work and dedication of Kris Zimmerman, the English casting and voice director for the series. We as fans have been fortunate to experience the talents of renowned voice actors such as David Hayter, Cam Clarke, Christopher Randolph, Jennifer Hale, Quinton Flynn, and Vanessa Marshall, among many others.
Zimmerman's expertise in directing voice talent has been instrumental in bringing Kojima's vision to life. Kojima expanded his collaborative approach, entrusting others like KJP's own Ryan Payton to work alongside Zimmerman on Metal Gear Solid 4.
Back to my reasoning for posting this in the first place. I want to highlight just how important Hideo Kojima's relationships with the Japanese voice cast are, especially with Akio Otsuka. Their bond is still strong today and speaks volumes about Kojima's understanding of his actors as people.
Akio and his father, Chikao ÅŒtsuka, who was also a voice actor had a difficult relationship to put it lightly, and knowing this, Kojima made a heartfelt decision to cast Chikao as Big Boss in MGS4. He hoped this would give them a chance to reconcile, and it turned out to be a meaningful step for both of them.
During the recording of Metal Gear Solid 4 when they recorded the final scenes, they played the song "Father & Son" from the soundtrack. It was significant and underscored the emotional journey of both Akio and Chikao making the performances feel all the more authentic and impactful. This was also meaningful on multiple levels for Kojima personally.
Before rushing to condemn Hideo Kojima for replacing voice actors, it's crucial to consider the broader context of his creative process and relationships within the industry. Kojima's connection with the Japanese voice cast has always been significantly stronger than with international voice actors. This disparity in relationships stems from his direct involvement in Japanese voice acting since the early 1990s, contrasting with his limited engagement in English voice production until more recently.
When developing Metal Gear Solid V, Kojima's decision to change voice actors was likely motivated by multiple factors, including the desire to work with other Hollywood talent. This choice aligns with his longstanding interest in cinematic storytelling and his attempts to cast film actors like Kurt Russell in earlier games. It's important to note that this decision wasn't a personal vendetta, but rather a creative choice.
I hope that understanding this context helps provide a more informed perspective on the changes in voice casting throughout the Metal Gear Solid series.

I understand that my comments will not change the minds of those who are still upset over the decision to recast Snake for the English cast of MGSV (totally understandable), but lines in that video like when referring to Kris and the decisions made "I take her word over anybody else's." just annoyed me. Over Kojima's words and reasons huh? Spare me.
