Yoji Shinkawa’s cover artwork for Weekly Famitsu’s July 2012 Metal Gear anniversary issue is a piece of series history worth revisiting. The magazine celebrated 25 years of Metal Gear, pairing a striking Solid Snake illustration with a retrospective on the games and the people behind them.
This is the July 26, 2012 issue of Weekly Famitsu, released on July 12. Famitsu’s announcement described a feature tracing the series from the original 1987 Metal Gear through 2010’s Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, focusing on seven games across those 25 years.
The feature included interviews with Hideo Kojima, Yoji Shinkawa and other key Kojima Productions staff. Shinkawa’s interview helped introduce the retrospective, making the artwork on the cover a fitting invitation to look back at the series.

The anniversary counted from the original Metal Gear on MSX2 in 1987, rather than the 1998 release of Metal Gear Solid. Konami also produced a dedicated 25th anniversary website, with a history feature adapted from the 2004 book Metal Gear Solid Naked and expanded to include later games.
For us, the appeal of this cover is how much character Shinkawa’s illustration carries. The rough brushwork and sharply defined silhouette give Snake a sense of motion even in a still image. It is a reminder that Metal Gear’s visual identity lives in its artwork as much as in the games themselves.
