Metal Gear and MGN: Our 2023 year in review — Part 1

2023 was full of surprises. It was a huge year for Metal Gear and Metal Gear fans alike. This might be one of the most notable years we have ever experienced for the series in recent history.

Here is Part 1 of our year in review, looking back through the moments, memories and conversations that shaped MGN’s year.

Keeping faith in Metal Gear

That start of the year started with MGN reminding Konami, we did not forget. Yes I really posted this. But respectfully! 😅 MGN was one of the very few who would constantly remind Konami of what we wanted back, something that would forever change this year.

The rumor mill was strong as ever, and it seemed like every week we had another media outlet with sources claiming Konami or someone was working on a Metal Gear remake, but without any details or sources to cite. Dealing with rumors was exhausting but inevitable.

Anniversaries and a difficult February

The weeks came and went and in February, PG celebrated its 10th anniversary of MGRR with some amazing artwork.

2023 wasn't all sunshine & rainbows though. MGN had its account hacked through the most unlikely of ways (thanks Xbox). Luckily the team at Twitter helped us recover the account & minimal damage was done. I would be lying if I said I wasn't in full blown panic mode at the time. 😭

March: still asking for the games to return

March has come and I will still beating the drums to Konami to do something, but always in a respectful way. I know it will sound weird but I still had faith Konami would be good for their word to bring the games back to us. Only time would tell.

Had our first stream on Twitter/X. Had over 2k views in total. Not bad.

We did a lot of reflecting back on years past and anniversaries this year. We always do, but I love that everyone enjoys when I remind people of these events. 🥰

A growing community

At the start of this year we had around 15k+ followers which is huge, especially for us. In April we would hit the 20k mark. I was speechless at the growth but nothing would prepare us for the rest of 2023. We currently sit at 45k and rising. Thank you so much for the support. <3

I have zero regrets about this tweet. 😤

To date this might be MGN's most liked and shared tweet. As someone who spends hours if not days creating content for this account, knowing my most successful tweet did numbers like this and it literally took me all of 10 minutes to make, made me twitch, just a little. 🤪

Rumours, sales and May 24

Yup, still dealt with rumors. I was so tired. 😴

This was a big deal especially considering you could only buy a few games still from digital store fronts for a year or more at the time.

May 24th. A date that will be something for the history books for sure. This day changed everything. I was screaming, crying, throwing up. Is this real life? AM I DREAMING?!?! HELLO?!?!?!?!

They kept their word and more so. 😭😭😭

Let us never forget though...

2024 could be huge. What do you think?

Finding our voice amid the excitement

I got quoted a lot for this tweet not only on Twitter/X but in many Youtube videos. 🫣

Making this tweet was very important for me. Please understand.

2023 was wild, I'm telling you.

This was another tweet that did huge numbers and reminded everyone what Kojima went through. I was glad so many people shared this.

We were still in May and I was dealing with the explosion of growth MGN had and educating people on opinions out there with my own. These were trying times.

Thirty thousand readers and a return to print

Back in April we hit 20k, It was now Jun 1st and we already hit 30k. Absolutely insane.

One of the best parts of running MGN is when I get to share stuff like this. This one did numbers as well. SO glad so many of you enjoyed this post.

As someone who has been covering the series since 1996, you have to understand how surreal it was to see a Metal Gear game featured in a new issue of a gaming magazine. Weekly Famitsu! I had to order this for the special occasion.

That's it for now. Part 2 in a new thread! 🧵
