The first in-engine look at Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater has arrived during the Xbox Partner Preview. The remake is being developed using Unreal Engine 5, and we shared the new footage as it appeared.
In our self-reply, we emphasized the early stage of the footage and shared what caught our attention:
Keep in mind this is PRE-ALPHA footage you're seeing here. The animations look great so far. 1:1 with the original Snake Eater. Crouch walk having me lose my mind atm. 🫨. Ok great, now do Peace Walker! No seriously do it.
When asked why Unreal Engine 5 was being used rather than Fox Engine, we gave the following personal assessment. We explicitly had no official explanation; this is our reasoning at the time, rather than a confirmed development account:
No official reason, but to me at least, it makes sense. I've heard people who worked on MGSV talk about the difficulties with FOX Engine and the hurdles they had to overcome to get things working properly. FE also had its limitations as does any engine. I think it was just more a matter of having a better tool set and engine over all that would meet the requirements for this remake to be done at the standards they are aiming at. I'm sure development costs and other things played a major factor. I don't think Konami has used the Fox Engine since the last futbol game from them was released, that is the one pre-eFootball change.
