Why Peace Walker’s inclusion in Master Collection Vol. 2 matters

We know a lot of attention is on Metal Gear Solid 4 being part of Master Collection Vol. 2, and understandably so, given its history and how difficult it has been to access. But Peace Walker being included is a big deal too.

Peace Walker is an essential part of Big Boss’s story.

Peace Walker is a bridge in the series—a very important one. Even that description may be an understatement: it is the direct, essential foundation for Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain. There are story beats and references in both games that simply won’t land in the same way without familiarity with Peace Walker. It sets the stage for Big Boss, the rise of Outer Heaven, and the ideological shift that shapes the rest of the saga. Hideo Kojima originally conceived it as a mainline title.

Much of the design and gameplay structure in The Phantom Pain originated in Peace Walker before evolving further. It may not click with everyone immediately, but it is absolutely worth playing if you care about the story’s history, context, and larger journey. This is where we see Big Boss make that philosophical shift.

We can’t stress this enough: skipping Peace Walker does a real disservice to your understanding of the series. You miss key events that tie everything together. Experiencing it gives you a better appreciation of Ground Zeroes and, especially, The Phantom Pain.

Its inclusion in Vol. 2 deserves excitement. If you’re coming to it for the first time, you have plenty to look forward to.
