Not news, so feel free to scroll on through. Long opinion piece ahead.
The current state of Delta.
🤔 I think we as fans of this series, especially entering this new era of it, need to get used to the idea that if MGS Delta is a successful remake for Konami (for reasons being that the game was faithful to the original work) and the new Metal Gear Solid team decide to further pursue other remakes of games in the series in the same way, things like loading in between zones, using the original VA dialogue, using the original mo-cap data, and much more are not something likely that will change.
The general consensus seems to be that a lot of fans are very happy with the direction that the team is taking with Delta, and the team has been very receptive to fan feedback, good or bad, in relation to the project. The team in Japan has been great about communicating their decision-making logic to us fans to better help us understand why they are doing what they are doing. You rarely see this type of transparency with developers, and they should be applauded for it.
The reality is, this team knows since Delta was announced their backs were against a wall with fans and their detractors. They know they are walking on sacred soil when it comes to these types of remakes and are trying their best to be respectful of the original work they have been tasked to handle. If we are being honest about this, every decision they make is being put under a microscope, and unfortunately I’ve already seen some MGS community “netizens” be quick to be overly negative, overly critical or just have unrealistic expectations towards Delta, an UNFINISHED GAME, because it doesn’t align to what THEY think the remake should be like in their eyes. I think everyone is fine with fan analysis of the game so far, but make it make sense in the context of the information we already have available and do it in good faith.
Producer Okamura stated in the hotline video just yesterday that even though the game is technically playable from start to end, there is still so much work in relation to fixing things, making things look right, and so on and have asked for our patience because they want to get this done right for us.
This is why they haven’t announced a release date yet. STOP ASKING! Let them work.
I’ll end with this: Delta won’t be for everyone, and it may not be for you. I’ve had the belief for many years that I don’t personally need a remake(s) of my favorite games. I’m very happy with what we have playing on original hardware, but these remakes are happening despite that, and that is ok. I still have the originals to play if I don’t like what is to come of the remakes. But as a fan, I’m grateful that the new team in Japan is taking the right approach and steps to hopefully make Delta a success. A lot is riding on the success of this game, and how its being handled. Konami knows this, the team in Japan knows this, and obviously we as fans know this.
“I think players might just need to see the game and try it for themselves, to decide if this approach works.”
—Producer Okamura
Since the beginning, I’ve said I will follow this project with cautious optimism. That hasn’t changed. But, I will give credit where credit is due, and so far, I like what I see.
If you managed to read all of this, thanks, I hope you have a wonderful day. 🫶
